Ascending from the bowels of the Gautrain station you emerge blinking at a large traffic intersection in the centre of Sandton – a mecca for shoppers, professionals, diamonds, and various business high flyers.
Across the intersection, on the corners of Rivonia Road and West Street, stands Junction Building.
On the third floor, over the shopping mall, you’ll find the reception lobby, bar, and restaurant of the Radisson Blue Gautrain Hotel, which is David Higgs’ new place of work after his surprise departure from Rust en Vrede in the picturesque Winelands.
The hotel is a business travellers hotel, and unashamedly so. People with serious faces rushed hither and thither with their laptops to attend meetings and conferences.
It being lunchtime, and hungry after the trip up from Cape Town, I decided to have lunch in Central One, a steak house, where David is cooking at the moment.
He will be revamping it and hopes to open, with a new menu, on August 18th.
After a decent lunch of hangar steak and chips I caught up with David, looking fresh and tanned after his recent trip to Italy.
We chatted and he told me his concept is “Tapas with a Twist”, which will match the cocktails and wines on offer. The bar area will have a “funkey, vibey atmosphere” and he will be targeting the after work “Sandton Set”.
There’ll be a resident DJ spinning out the tunes every night.
The sprinkling of David’s pixie dust will extend to a Herb Wall that he is building at one end of the space. Chandeliers will also add to the atmosphere.
David admits that the transformation will be a “huge challenge”, but that he felt he was up to it.
